Rupaneethan Pakkiyarajah is a Sri Lankan visual artist and academic whose multidisciplinary practice spans sculpture, installation, drawing, and ceramic arts. Rooted in themes of identity, memory, ecology, and socio-cultural transformation, his work often bridges personal narratives with collective histories, exploring the interconnectedness between land, people, and place.
He currently serves as a Senior Lecturer in Sculpture and Installation Art at the Department of Visual & Technological Arts, Swami Vipulananda Institute of Aesthetic Studies, Eastern University, Sri Lanka. He also teaches Visual Art and Art History as a Visiting Lecturer at the National Institute of Education, Sri Lanka. Rupaneethan holds a Master’s Degree with Honors in Decorative & Applied Art and Folk Crafts from Gzhel State University, Moscow, following earlier academic training at the University of Jaffna.
His artistic journey includes solo exhibitions—Sri Lanka: A Puzzle of Symbols (Russian State Library, Moscow, 2024) and A Search for Connectivity (Paradise Road Galleries, Colombo, 2021)—as well as participation in major international exhibitions such as The Land Sings Back (Drawing Room, London, 2025), Colomboscope: Language is Migrant (2022), and the International Festival of Art Pottery (Gzhel, Russia, 2024). His works appear in private and institutional collections across Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, the UK, the USA, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Russia.
Rupaneethan has been widely recognized for his achievements, receiving several first-place awards in ceramic art and design from Gzhel State University (2024), alongside multiple publications and conference presentations on contemporary art practice, folk traditions, ecological craft cultures, and Russian ceramic aesthetics.
Alongside his artistic practice, he is deeply engaged in community-focused projects, collaborative art exchanges, pedagogical development, and research on cultural heritage. His work continues to evolve through international residencies, interdisciplinary workshops, and curatorial encounters that shape his ongoing exploration of human-land relationships and contemporary visual expression.
