Collection: Sumaiya Sirin

Sumaiya Sirin (b. 2001, Lalgola, Murshidabad, West Bengal) is an interdisciplinary artist based in Delhi. She completed her MFA in Art, Media, and Performance from Shiv Nadar University in 2025, and her BFA in Painting from Sister Nivedita University, Kolkata in 2023.

Sirin’s practice engages with the afterlives of language, memory, and image, tracing how meaning persists, mutates, and reappears across personal and collective experience. Drawing from the layered cultural histories of Bengal alongside the dispersed and often ephemeral vocabularies of digital life, her work considers what remains in circulation after moments have passed, and how these residues continue to shape perception and identity.

Working across soft sculpture, fabric collage, casting, and installation, she constructs assemblages from text, symbols, and everyday materials. These fragments function as traces rather than statements, forming unstable narrative fields where presence and absence coexist. Words are often partial, gestures interrupted, and forms suspended, suggesting a condition in which communication is felt as much as it is read.

Her work is marked by a quiet oscillation between familiarity and estrangement. Through subtle shifts in tone, scale, and material, she activates a sense of the spectral within the everyday, where nostalgia, humour, and dissonance operate in tandem. In this context, her practice reflects on how images and language linger, returning in altered forms that resist resolution.

Recent presentations include ART 800 (2025) at Shiv Nadar University. She has also participated in group exhibitions with Abir India and at the Ravi Jain Art Foundation at Dhoomimal Art Gallery.
