Overview
Sajan Mani is an intersectional artist from a rubber-tapping family in northern Kerala, India, based between Kochi and Berlin. His work explores the struggles of marginalized communities in India, focusing on the "Black Dalit body" as a socio-political metaphor to confront pain, shame, and power. Mani addresses ecological issues, migration, and the relationship between humans and animals, often using water and indigenous perspectives to examine space politics.
He has participated in international biennales and exhibitions, including Odalala (2024), Mediation on Ignorance (2024), and New Performance Turku Biennale (2023). Notable shows include Kochi Biennale (2021) and Vancouver Biennale (2014).
Mani was awarded the Berlin Art Prize (2021), the Prince Claus Mentorship Award (2022), and Breakthrough Artist of the Year (2022). He has also received several fellowships and grants, including the Berlin Senate Research Grant and the Akademie Schloss Solitude Fellowship.
Currently based in Berlin.
