Overview
Obayya is a visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans painting, installation, theatre set design, and documentary filmmaking. Originally from Puttur, Karnataka, his work is shaped by experiences of rural–urban migration, drawing on travel as a key influence in developing narratives that explore movement, memory, and place.
A graduate of Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata (MFA, 2014) and Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts, Mysore (BFA, 2009), Obayya integrates lived experiences into immersive, research-driven works that reflect socio-spatial transitions and cultural displacement. His recent solo exhibitions include The Motherland at Kalinka Art Gallery, Pondicherry (2024), Temporal Dimensions at Indian Heritage Cities Network, Mysore (2023), and Gesture / Jester at Venkatappa Art Gallery, Bengaluru.
He has participated in several prestigious residencies, including APRE Art Residency, Piramal Art Residency, and Space 118, and is a recipient of the Shenoy Art Foundation Grant (2021) and K.K. Hebbar Art Foundation Grant (2022).
Born in Puttur, Karnataka, he currently lives and works in Mumbai, India.
