Overview
“Painting for me is a process of discovering oneself...it becomes a metaphor of a larger thing.”
Amit Ambalal, originally a businessman, pursued his passion for painting in 1979 after selling his family business. Influenced by his mother, who studied under Chhaganlal Jadav, Ambalal's early love for art evolved into a full-time pursuit at age 36. His work blends humor and irony with everyday scenes, depicting characters with a playful naivety that highlights the theatricality of daily life.
A founding member of the Contemporary Painters Group in Ahmedabad, he has contributed to institutions like Bharat Bhavan and the National Gallery of Modern Art. Ambalal is also known for his collection of Pichwais, devotional cloth paintings depicting Lord Krishna's life.
Currently based in Ahmedabad.
