Alankrita Shrivastava

Alankrita Shrivastava is an Indian screenwriter, director, and producer based in Mumbai.


She made her directorial debut with Turning 30 in 2011, and rose to prominence with Lipstick Under My Burkha (2017), which won the Grand Prix at Créteil International Women’s Film Festival, multiple international awards—including the Spirit of Asia Prize at Tokyo and the Oxfam Award at MAMI—and a Filmfare Critics nomination

The film, noted for its feminist themes and portrayal of women’s desires, overcame major certification hurdles in India.


Shrivastava has since written and directed other notable works, including Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare (2019), which premiered at the Busan International Film Festival, and the short Open Doors. On television, she co-wrote and directed episodes for Made in Heaven (Amazon Prime) Seasons 1 and 2, directed a segment in Modern Love: Mumbai, and created, wrote, and directed the Netflix series Bombay Begums (2022).

Known for her strong feminist voice, Shrivastava champions women’s stories featuring nuanced, real characters. She practices Buddhism and currently lives and works in Mumbai.
