Overview

Aakriti Chandervanshi is a visual artist, designer, and trained architect whose multidisciplinary practice is grounded in the excavation of ancestral memory and the feminist re-reading of South Asian landscapes- both material and imagined. Drawing on archival fragments, oral histories, and built environments, Chandervanshi constructs a visual language that interrogates the politics of place, inheritance, and erasure.

Trained at Sir J.J. College of Architecture, Mumbai, her work challenges canonical narratives of architectural history and conservation by centering gendered subjectivities and emotional cartographies. Through photography, text, spatial design, and installation, she reclaims silenced genealogies and domestic architectures- foregrounding women’s labour, memory, and resistance within contested terrains.

 Her recent body of work explores the intergenerational transmission of knowledge and trauma, mapping how landscapes hold both grief and agency. Projects such as Gul Posh, which appeared on the cover of Vogue (2025), meditate on floral vocabularies as coded forms of ancestral communication. Chandervanshi’s practice draws from her research at the Pathshala South Asian Media Institute in Dhaka, where she investigated the built-emotional landscape of Nepal from a feminist archival lens.

 She was awarded Runner-Up for the Alpine Fellowship Visual Art Prize (2021) and shortlisted for Documentary Photographer of the Year in the same year. Her work has been featured in British Journal of Photography, Financial Times, BBC, and Domus, among others. Her exhibitions include Tender Buttons and a Bellyache (APRE Art House, Mumbai, 2023).

 At once intimate and expansive, her practice reclaims the terrain of ancestral archives- reinscribing them with feminist agency, embodied memory, and speculative possibility.
